FAIRFAX, Va. - Sophomoore first baseman
Owen Hull drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Patriots to a 5-4 walk-off win over Towson on Tuesday afternoon at Spuhler Field.
THE LEADOFF
- Hull had two hits, drove in two runs and scored one run.
- Sophomore second baseman Jake Butler tied the game in the eighth with a two-run single.
- Junior shortstop Owen Clyne walked three times and scored two runs.
Patriots junior starter
Logan Rumberg tossed two innings of one-hit ball. Towson (6-15, 0-0 CAA) took the lead against George Mason (14-7, 2-1 A-10) freshman
Jake Drumm in the third on a leadoff home run to make it 1-0.
The Patriots responded in the home half of the inning against Tigers junior starter Jace Cunnane. With one out, junior right fielder
Drew Canody bunted his way on and stole second. With two out, Hull knocked in a run with a single through the right side to tie the game, 1-1.
Towson took a 3-1 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth.
George Mason got a run back in the bottom of the inning. Clyne led off with a walk and scored on an error to make it a one-run game at 3-2.
The Tigers added a run in the top of the seventh. Senior shortstop Jordan Peyton was hit by a pitch to start the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a walk, freshman first baseman Nich Francuzenko plated a run with a fielder's choice ground out to make the score 4-2.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Patriots tied the game 4-4 on a two-out, two-run single by Butler.
In the home half of the ninth, Clyne led off with a walk and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. Pinch hitter
Toby Hueber was walked and with two out, freshman left fielder
Lucas Alberti was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Hull stepped to the plate and drove in the winning run with an infield single to the shortstop for the 5-4 victory.
The Patriots used seven pitchers in the game. Rumberg allowed just one hit over 2.0 innings in the start. Graduate student
Daniel Elliott (2-0) earned the win.
For the Tigers, Cunnane allowed two runs on three hits in 5.0 innings. Senior Max Simpson (1-4) gave up one run on one hit in 1.0 inning of work and took the loss.
The Patriots are on the road for a three-game series against St. Bonaventure beginning Friday with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. at Handler Park in St. Bonaventure, N.Y.
